Avian and Exotics

Seen at North Madison Animal Hospital Only

Avian and Exotic Veterinarians aim to restore and maintain the health of many different non-domestic  species kept as pets.  We provide information regarding the special husbandry needs and basic care of these special species, offer wellness programs to maintain pet health.  Our full time Exotics Veterinarian is trained in all aspects of exotic pet care.  Our facility includes a dedicated exotics ward, allowing us to offer hospitalization and boarding in an area designed to provide the best support while minimizing stress on our patients.

Diagnostic's and Treatments we provide:

Imaging: Radiography
Dentistry: Evaluation of small mammal dental health, routine occlusal adjustments and trims, extractions, and abscess debridement, routine ultrasonic scaling and dental prophylaxis.
Anesthesia: We have specialized equipment for administering anesthesia and monitoring vital signs of exotic patients.  Patients requiring anesthesia may be supported with intravenous/intraosseous fluid therapy, connective heat, positive pressure mechanical ventilation, blood pressure monitoring, and cardiac monitoring.  Thermostatically controlled incubators are used to house patients recovering from surgical, and other critical procedures.
Surgery: We can perform any surgical procedure necessary for small mammals, reptiles and birds.  Radio Frequency-Modulated Surgery is available as well.
Some exotic surgeries include:
Small mammal Ovariohystercetomy (Spay)
Small mammal Orchidectomy (Neuter)
Avian, mammal, reptile soft tissue surgery
Limited orthopedic surgery

Appointments available 4 days a week and emergencies accepted at all times.  It is our goal to minimize "walk-ins" as much as possible to reduce wait time.  If possible, please call ahead so that we may fill an appointment slot.

We see the following animals as routine appointments:
All pet birds
Chinchillas
Ferrets
Frogs/Amphibians
Gerbils
Guinea Pigs
Hamsters
Lizards
Rabbits
Rats/Mice
Snakes
Sugar Gliders
Turtles/Tortoises

We will NOT schedule appointments for non-human primates, pot bellied pigs or venomous snakes, and in order to focus our attention on pet medicine, we will be unabble to accommodate wildlife.

ALL PETS MUST BE IN AN APPROPRIATE CARRIER or they will not be permitted into the reception area or hospital.  This is very important for the safety of the pet and in consideration of the rest of the pets and clients in the hospital( i.e. All birds should be in carriers and all snakes should be in a pillow case, sock or other cloth bag.)
